Short answer: match frame finish to painting style (walnut for Renaissance and Oil, natural oak for Watercolor, black for Pop Art), pick size to your wall (12×16 for shelves, 18×24 for a real spot, 24×32 for anchor placement), and hang at 57-60 inches eye-level with mat and acrylic glazing.
Framing a pet portrait comes down to three decisions: which finish suits the painting style, what size fits the wall, and where the piece should hang. Every framed print in our shop arrives museum-mounted and ready to hang — you're not framing anything yourself unless you order the poster tier. This guide covers the three decisions and the common mistakes to avoid.
Which frame finish suits which style?
- Renaissance — walnut (warm richness matches the palette), ornate gold matte (period-accurate), or black (gallery-formal). Skip white.
- Classic Oil — walnut, black, or natural oak. All three work; walnut is the mantel-piece default.
- Watercolor — natural oak, white, or black. White reads airy; natural oak reads modern-hand-crafted; black anchors.
- Impressionist — natural oak, walnut, or white. Warm woods echo the palette.
- Cinematic — black or dark grey. Minimal frames — the piece is dramatic enough that ornate framing fights it.
- Pop Art — white or black. Museum-poster register.
- Charcoal Sketch — black, walnut, or natural oak. The frame does the most work here since the drawing is quiet.
- Comic Book — black or white. Contains the graphic energy against a busy wall.
- Anime / Pixar 3D — natural oak, white, or black. Warm woods for animated warmth; white for kids' rooms.
- Van Gogh — natural oak or walnut. Warm frames don't compete with the vibrant palette.
- Ukiyo-e — natural oak (echoes the woodblock lineage) or walnut. Minimal, wood-forward.
- Vintage Photo — walnut, ornate gold matte, or black. Period-accurate warm frames.

- Shelves, side tables, hallway console: 12×16 framed. Intimate keepsake size.
- Bedroom wall, small hallway, kitchen wall: 12×16 or 18×24 framed. Big enough to notice, small enough to fit anywhere.
- Real wall spot (above a chair, next to a bed, empty bedroom wall): 18×24 or 24×32 framed. The everyday wall-portrait size.
- Above the couch (standard 78-84" sofa): 24×32 framed or larger. Under 18×24 looks lost.
- Mantel or above-the-fireplace anchor: 24×32 framed. This is the "focal point of the room" placement.
- Hallway gallery wall: 12×16 pieces in matched frames, hung in a grid or grouping.
Where should you hang it?
- Center of the piece at 57-60 inches off the floor. Museum-standard viewing height — the same rule galleries use to set art. Applies whether you're 5'4" or 6'2"; it's the average sightline.
- Over furniture: 6-10 inches of breathing room between top of the couch/sideboard/console and bottom of the frame.
- Indirect light. Direct sun for hours a day fades any print (giclée, canvas, metal) over years. Hang in a spot with ambient light, not on a sun-facing wall with no shade.
- Away from radiators, heat vents, and bathrooms. Temperature swings and humidity are print enemies. Hallways, living rooms, bedrooms are perfect. Bathrooms and kitchens near stovetops are riskier long-term.
Gallery wall placement
Match the horizontal center line rather than the top or bottom edge — pieces at the same visual center read as a considered gallery wall. Leave 2-4 inches between framed pieces. Odd-numbered groupings (3, 5, 7) look more balanced than even (2, 4). Mix orientations (portrait + landscape) for visual rhythm.
For a multi-portrait pet wall (2+ pets, or multiple styles of the same pet), match either the frame finish OR the mat width — matching both feels rigid; matching neither feels random.
Common questions
Do I have to frame it myself?
No — every framed print arrives already museum-mounted, matted in snow-white, hand-fitted into your chosen frame behind acrylic glazing, and wire-hung. Ready to place on the wall the moment it arrives.
What if the frame finish doesn't match my decor?
We offer 8 finishes. Match to your dominant wood/metal tones. If unsure, Otis can recommend based on a photo of your space.
Can I order a poster and frame it myself?
Yes — the poster tier ($65-$149) is intended for framing yourself. Ships flat. Standard sizes fit off-the-shelf frames.
What size fits over my couch?
Over a standard sofa (78-84"), a 24×32 framed print reads at natural proportion. Never go smaller than 18×24 for above-couch — it looks lost.
How do I hang next to existing art?
Match the horizontal center line rather than the top/bottom edge. Leave 2-4 inches between framed pieces.
