How to Gift a Pet Portrait

Short answer: grab a photo from their Instagram, pick Watercolor (safest gift style) or Renaissance (wow-factor), order 12×16 or 18×24 framed, ship direct with a printed card, allow 10-14 days for delivery. Every purchase carries a 30-day refund-or-remake guarantee.

The complete workflow for gifting a pet portrait: find a photo, pick a style that suits their taste (not yours), size it for any wall, ship direct with a note, and time it for the moment. This guide covers all five decisions plus the common mistakes that turn a good gift into a disappointing one.

Step 1 — Find a photo (you don't need permission)

Most gift-givers stall here because they assume they need to ask the recipient for a photo. You don't. Every pet owner has posted their pet publicly at some point. Sources:

  • Their Instagram — pet photos are the most-posted category on the platform. Grab a shot with the pet's face clearly visible.
  • Facebook — older photos, family shots, pet-with-owner combos.
  • Shared album or Google Photos — if you're in a family or friend group album, likely to have pet shots.
  • Texts they sent you — nearly everyone texts their friends photos of their pet. Screenshot works.
  • Ask a mutual friend — framed as "I want to make a small surprise for [name], do you have a good photo of [pet]?" — most people are delighted to help.

Asking the recipient directly ruins the surprise and puts the gift assembly on them. Skip it. The finished portrait is the moment; the photo hunt is your work to do quietly.

Step 2 — Pick a style that suits their taste

Gift-style selection is where most first-time buyers overthink. Match to the recipient's taste, not yours. Four safe defaults by personality:

  • Watercolor — the universal safe gift. Soft, warm, works with almost every decor. Best default when you don't know their taste.
  • Renaissance — the wow-factor gift. Formal, mantel-worthy, especially strong if the recipient has a traditional home.
  • Classic Oil — the everyday warm gift. Reads as considered without being flashy. Works for parents, grandparents, traditional homes.
  • Cinematic — the modern gift. Best for someone with contemporary or minimalist taste, home offices, gallery-style walls.

Avoid Pop Art, Comic Book, and Van Gogh as gift defaults unless you specifically know the recipient loves those aesthetics. They're strong styles but not universal.

Step 3 — Size for any wall

When you don't know the recipient's wall dimensions, order 12×16 or 18×24 framed. Both sizes fit almost every possible placement:

  • 12×16 framed — sits on a bookshelf, nightstand, or side table if wall space is limited. Fits above a small dresser or in a hallway. Reads as considered gift without over-committing to wall placement.
  • 18×24 framed — anchors a real wall spot. Bigger and more mantel-worthy. Better if you know the recipient has an empty wall.
  • Skip 8×10 — feels small as a gift. Fine for keepsake, wrong register for gift.
  • Skip 24×32 and up — needs a specific wall spot. Great if you know the wall, wrong if you don't.

Step 4 — Ship direct with a note

Enter the recipient's address at checkout. The package ships direct with no invoice or pricing visible. Optionally add a printed note in the studio for a card in the shipment — one or two sentences works better than a long letter:

  • "Thought you'd like this." (understated)
  • "Because Buster deserves to be on a wall." (specific)
  • "Happy birthday. Love, [name]." (traditional)

For a memorial gift specifically, the note can be shorter — sometimes just the pet's name and yours is right. See our sympathy portrait guide for note suggestions.

Step 5 — Time it 10-14 days ahead

Framed prints take 3-5 business days to produce, then 3-7 days shipping depending on the recipient's country. Total delivery window is 5-12 business days. Order 10-14 days before the specific gifting date to allow shipping cushion.

For last-minute gifts, digital download is instant after checkout. You get the full-resolution file to print locally (any consumer photo lab), forward as a "coming physical print" preview, or gift as digital-only.

Common gift-buying mistakes

  • Asking the recipient for a photo. Ruins the surprise. Grab from public sources.
  • Picking a style you love, not one they'll love. Match to their taste, not yours.
  • Ordering too small. A photo print reads as keepsake, not gift. For a framed piece, 12×16 is the smallest we sell and reads as a gift.
  • Ordering too big without knowing their wall. A 24×32 print on a wall too small for it looks wrong. 12×16 or 18×24 is safer for gifts.
  • Waiting too long. Order 10-14 days ahead. Shipping windows have real variance.
